5 Tips to boost your Eye Health

It is easy to get sidetracked with work, with school, and with other things today that you might forget to take care of other equally important things – the health of your eyes Your vision takes part in all you do, may it be for school, for work, or for taking care of the family. However, a good and clear vision isn’t enough to guarantee that your eyes are healthy. You can do several things to keep your eyes and your vision in good condition.

Eating right

A balanced diet is important to keep your body healthy and believe it or not a healthy diet affects your eyes! Make sure to choose a variety of foods. Leafy green vegetables, fatty fishes such as salmon, lutein, zinc, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E are a great place to start. Foods with omega-3 fatty acid that’s great for your macula. (The Macula is the part of the eye responsible for your central vision) Drinking too much alcohol or eating foods with lots of saturated fats harm the health of your macula. Remember, your eyes have specific needs, and it’s important to fill in these needs.

Keep distance

You often hear this phrase on the road, but it also applies to your eyesight. Starting at computer screens, TV monitors, phone screens for a long period of time can cause eyes issues including:

  • Blurry vision

  • Dry eyes

  • Headaches

  • Neck, back, and shoulder pain

  • Eyestrain

Eye Protection

You can avoid these by making sure that your eyes are protected. One way to do this is to wear blue light blocking glasses or prescription glasses that included blue light blocking features. Additionally, it’s important to make sure these prescriptions are up to date. If the eye strain is persistent, it’s best to take it to your eye doctor and get computer glasses to protect your eyes.

Position your computer so that the top of the monitor is leveled with your eyes. It allows your eyes to look down the screen instead of looking up, which stresses the eyes even more. Limit your screen time as well, and give your eyes a rest every 20 minutes. Follow the 20-20-20 rule, rest your eyes for 20 minutes and look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Stop smoking and exercise instead

Smoking exposes your eyes to oxidative stress and increases your likelihood of getting cataracts, macular degeneration, or damage to your optic nerve. If you have already stopped smoking, it’s best to keep at it to keep your eye healthy.

Keeping our body healthy isn’t just about eating healthy. It’s also about getting the right amount of physical activity. Be active and physically fit as this keeps you from risks of health conditions associated with loss of vision such as diabetic retinopathy, a result of Type 2 diabetes.

Keep your hands clean

The eyes are sensitive to germs and infection. They are easily irritated. It’s important to wash your hands and keep them clean before touching your eyes or putting on your contact lenses.

If you suffer from eye issues such as infection, persistent itch, inflammation, and others, you need to reach out to an eye doctor right away. Don’t prolong your agony thinking that it will go away in time because that will only worsen your condition.

Look for a trusted eye doctor near you and get your eyes well-taken care of.
